God’s free and holy will is exercised according to His infinite wisdom in the creation of some vessels for noble purposes and some for ignoble. His most high and holy motive is His own glory. Vessels of wrath glorify the Lord’s holiness and justice. Vessels of mercy glorify the Lord’s Loving and gracious character. John Calvin rightly challenges us in saying, “Would we have the power of God so limited as to be unable to do more than our mind can comprehend? I say with Augustine, that the Lord has created those who, as he certainly foreknew, were to go to destruction, and he did so because he so willed. Why he willed it is not ours to ask, as we cannot comprehend, nor can it become us even to raise a controversy as to the justice of the divine will.” I pray that the Holy Spirit will illumine your heart and mind to understand this challenging portion of Scripture.
